Middle Tennessee Golden Retriever Rescue (MTGRR) is a volunteer-operated, non-profit organization dedicated to new beginnings for displaced Golden Retrievers. Our purpose is to facilitate the adoption of displaced and unwanted Golden Retrievers; to provide a good quality of life for homeless Golden; to reduce the abuse and neglect of unwanted Golden Retrievers through rehabilitation and adoption, and to seek to reduce the number of unwanted Golden. Further, we provide public education by means of brochures, a newsletter and canine education events about responsible pet ownership and the Golden Retriever breed.
MTGRR is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization.
In Memory of Dexter
MTGRR's First Golden Retriever: 1998 - 2011 The rescue of Dexter was the impetus for the formation of Middle TN Golden Retriever Rescue (MTGRR) in 1998. Here is Dex's story from his owner and the founder of MTGRR:
"Dexter was born on my birthday on April 14, 1997. Bred to be Christmas puppies, he and his brother Rennie were rescued from the pound in Memphis right after Christmas. My husband and I helped in the Canine Underground Railroad (CUR) serving the Nashville to Knoxville transports. A Knoxville based golden retriever rescue had arranged the rescue and run. Following the transport, I offered to help "in any way I could" and within two days I was asked to foster Dexter. Both pups were in such bad condition that little hope was held out for their survival. Dexter came home with me on a cold stormy night in January. He suffered with kennel cough for days and distemper for weeks. Somewhere in that time, I knew that this beautiful brown eyed, red boy would not leave my heart. Unfortunately, his brother did not survive... but Dexter did, and we adopted him and he joined our Ellie, the golden girl we adopted from Tennessee Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (TVGRR) in September 1997.
Little did I know that their adoptions and my question of "Why isn't there a Golden Retriever Rescue in Nashville?" would lead to the formulation of Middle Tennessee Golden Retriever Rescue. The journey to rescue Goldens began with goldens and their humans meeting in Mt Juliet, with the pups running in the fenced yard and the humans developing policies, applying for 501(C)3 status, sewing bandanas and most importantly beginning to provide vet services, foster homes and forever homes for many goldens those first years. Dexter and Ellie moved to Rhode Island with us in 2001 and continued to bring total joy and happiness into our lives. Shortly after Ellie went to the Bridge in 2005 we adopted Grace, a redhead from a shelter in PA.
I am humbled and proud to know that the group whose inspiration came from the rescue of Ellie and Dexter continues to go forward in rescuing many beloved unwanted animals! My good wishes go with you as you continue your important work."
